Tell a friend
Arabia is a cornerstone of Finnish design. Its tableware has been a part of Finnish homes for over a hundred years – in everyday life, at parties and now also as collectors' treasures. But how do you recognize Arabia's classic series when you're browsing flea markets, auctions or Wint's selection? Here are a few tips to get you started.
Arabia has dozens of different series, but some are particularly well-known and collected. Ruska is a stoneware series designed by Kaj Franck, recognizable by its dark, vivid glaze. Paratiisi , Birger Kaipiainen's colorful and richly decorated series, is one of Arabia's icons. Kilta , later known as Teema, represents Kaj Franck's simple design and clear colors. In addition, series such as Kaira, Valencia and Kosmos are known for their hand-painted surfaces in shades of blue, green and brown.
Arabia stamps and markings are also an important aid in identification. Older dishes have a crown stamp and the text “Made in Finland”, while in the 1960s and 1970s the more modern “ARABIA FINLAND” stamp was used. Some sets may also have the designer’s signature or the name of the set. However, it is good to remember that some items have only been sold with stickers, so the absence of a stamp does not always mean they are copies.
Materials and colors provide further clues. Stoneware is usually heavier and thicker, while porcelain is light and translucent. Colors reflect the era: brown, green, and orange were popular in the 1960s and 70s, while colors became brighter in later series.
The best way for a collector to learn is to compare different sets and learn to recognize details such as the shape of the handle of a cup or the bottom stamp of a bowl. Condition is always an important factor in increasing value – undamaged and well-preserved pieces are the most sought after. A good rule of thumb is that if an item immediately evokes a familiar “Arabian” feel, you are probably on the right track.
Arabia's classic series are much more than tableware – they are a piece of Finnish cultural history. Once you learn to recognize the stamps, colors and design, you will quickly begin to distinguish Ruska, Paratiisi and other iconic series from each other.
